Vogt dropped from 40-man

Former Biscuits catcher Stephen Vogt has been removed from Tampa Bay's 40-man roster.

The Rays also removed catcher Robinson Chirinos so they could add two players for their 25-man Opening Day roster.

Reliever Jamey Wright and infielder Shelley Duncan will be with the Rays, who added Duncan because infielder Luke Scott went on the disabled list.

Schenk, Paduch won't start on active roster

Left-handed pitcher Neil Schenk is returning to the Biscuits, though he won't be on the Opening Day active roster. Right-hander Jim Paduch will be with Triple-A Durham, but he'll also be on the "phantom DL."

Guerrieri to take extra week in extended spring

Right-handed pitcher Taylor Guerrieri, a top-tier Tampa Bay prospect, won't start the season on time.

Guerrieri is being held back for an extra week, he said, because he hasn't thrown enough innings in spring training. He's supposed make his full-season debut with low-Class A Bowling Green this year.

Guerrieri said the plan is for him to leave Saturday.

Guerrieri, a first-round draft pick in 2011, had a 1.04 ERA in 52 innings at short-season Hudson Valley last year.

Seitzer to skip high-A, headed to Biscuits

First baseman Cameron Seitzer, who hit .307 last year for low-Class A Bowling Green, will start this year with the Biscuits.

He's skipping high-A ball and will be on Montgomery's Opening Day roster.

"I never expected that, but I'm very thankful for the opportunity," Seitzer said. "I'm just going to play every day and do the best I can."

Seitzer hit .285 with Rookie-level Princeton in 2011 after being taken in the 11th round of the draft out of Oklahoma. The 22-year-old's father, Kevin, played 12 major league seasons for the Royals, Brewers, A's and Indians.

Sheridan released by Rays

First baseman Mike Sheridan, who hit .246 for the Biscuits last year, has been released by the Rays.

Double-A roster guessing

Let's do some roster guessing.
I feel pretty confident that the 23 players listed below will start the season with the Biscuits. I also suspect that reliever Juan Sandoval may go to Montgomery, but he's not listed.

The Rays are supposed to release the final rosters Sunday. The Biscuits can have 25 players on their active roster, though Tampa Bay regularly sends a few non-active extras. Last year, 27 players were on the list.

Catchers (2): Mayo Acosta, Mark Thomas
Infielders (6): Robi Estrada, Shawn O'Malley, Robby Price, Cameron Seitzer, Greg Sexton, Riccio Torrez
Outfielders (4): Todd Glaesmann, Kevin Kiermaier, Mikie Mahtook, Ty Morrison

Pitchers (11): Matt Buschmann, Marquis Fleming, Merrill Kelly, Braulio Lara, Adam Liberatore, Victor Mateo, Jimmy Patterson, C.J. Riefenhauser, Enny Romero, Albert Suarez, Jake Thompson

Anderson wins spring Rays award

Former Biscuit Leslie Anderson won Tampa Bay's award for the top rookie in major league spring training. Anderson is scheduled to start the season at Triple-A Durham. He led the Rays with a .396 average and knocked in 12 runs.

Video interviews: Taylor Guerrieri, Mike Sheridan

Feel free to check out video interviews with elite Tampa Bay pitching prospect Taylor Guerrieri, who is headed to low-Class A Bowling Green this year, and first baseman Mike Sheridan, who played for the Biscuits last season.

Quate to start season late

Zach Quate won't break camp with the rest of the minor league Rays.

Quate said he'll stay behind for a few weeks of extended spring training, but it's not because he's hurt.

"I feel great. I'm ready to go," Quate said. "It's all about managing my innings and making sure I make it through the season."

Quate threw just two innings last year because of elbow and shoulder injuries. He's been with the Biscuits the last two years.

"I don't want to look at this as a negative. It's really a positive," Quate said. "The Rays want to see me succeed or they wouldn't be doing it. It's not a negative."

Archer, Romero on pace for Opening Day starts

Chris Archer and Enny Romero are the starting pitchers for the Rays in today's higher-level minor league exhibition games vs. the Red Sox. That puts them on pace to be the Opening Day starters for Triple-A Durham and the Double-A Biscuits.

Here are the higher-level lineups vs. the Red Sox, with major leaguer Luke Scott batting at will in the Triple-A game:

TRIPLE-A
Jason Bourgeois lf, Mike Fontenot dh, Wil Myers rf, Leslie Anderson 1b, Shelley Duncan dh, Chris Gimenez 3b, Stephen Vogt c, Brandon Guyer cf, Tim Beckham 2b, Cole Figueroa ss

Pitchers: Chris Archer, Brandon Gomes, ??
Bench: Mike Sheridan, Hak-Ju Lee, Rich Thompson

DOUBLE-A
Ty Morrison cf, Robby Price 2b, Todd Glaesmann lf, Cameron Seitzer 1b, Mikie Mahtook rf, Kevin Kiermaier dh, Mark Thomas dh, Riccio Torrez 3b, Shawn O'Malley ss (Robi Estrada in 8th), Mayo Acosta cc (Keith Castillo in 8th)

Pitchers: Enny Romero, Jose Molina, Zach Quate, Matt Ramsey

With Kang to Crabs, Glaesmann likely with Biscuits

Kyeong Kang, with the Biscuits the last two seasons, says he's starting this year back at high-Class A Charlotte and hopes to quickly return to Montgomery.

With Kang, 25, staying down, that likely means 22-year-old Todd Glaesmann will break camp with the Biscuits.

"There are so many young guys out here, and they're playing well," Kang said. "Last year, I started the season really good, but then I (went down) a little bit. I have to work to get back and try to stay up there."

Kang hit a combined .253 with 25 home runs the last two years for the Biscuits. But his average fell 20 points and he had 50 more strikeouts last year in just 29 more at-bats.

"They're saying we'll see how it goes the first month and, if anything changes, I'll probably go back to Double-A," Kang said.

Glaesmann was Tampa Bay's 2012 minor league player of the year after hitting .285 with 21 home runs between Class A Bowling Green and Charlotte.

Montgomery's other outfielders are expected to be Mikie Mahtook, Kevin Kiermaier and Ty Morrison. The three have previous Montgomery experience.

Vogt confident first major league hit will be soon

Catcher Stephen Vogt was 0-for-25 last year with the Rays in his first major league season. Vogt is headed to Triple-A Durham to start this year, but he hopes to soon pick up his first major league hit.

Also, Alex Colome's season ended a few weeks early last year with a lat strain. He's feeling great this year and determined to stay healthy.

Vettleson eager to show arm to higher league

There were times when coaches were waving their stop sign before Bowling Green's Drew Vettleson was even near the ball.

Word spread quickly in the Midwest League last year: Don't test Vettleson's arm.

How else can you describe a first-month total of 10 assists that, in the two months that followed, increased by just six? By the end of the year, Vettleson had 20 assists.

"It started getting funny," Vettleson said. "The first half of the season, teams pushed the envelope. I was able to string together a lot of assists in a row.

"And then it just stopped."

Vettleson, who will start this year at high-Class A Charlotte, wasn't too shabby with a bat, either. He hit .275 with 15 home runs and 20 steals for the Hot Rods.

But his arm was his biggest story.

He admits trying to bait some runners into trying it. On one soft single, he acted like he'd lost the ball. The runner almost fell for it but scrambled back to first.

"It was kind of fun to play around with it and see what you can do to get extra outs," Vettleson said.

The 21-year-old changed his offseason habits in hopes of "a breakout" 2013. Spring training for him, he said, wasn't a stereotypical spring training.

"I feel that I didn't use spring training at all to get ready for the season," Vettleson said. "I've used it to get into midseason form."

Video interviews: Colome, Glaesmann

Here's some video of Alex Colome, who started last year with the Biscuits and remains one of Tampa Bay's top prospects.

Also, don't miss Todd Glaesmann, the Rays' minor league player of the year in 2012.

Rays trade De La Rosa to Angels

Former Biscuits reliever Dane De La Rosa was traded by the Rays to the Los Angeles Angels today for reliever Steve Geltz.

Geltz made two major league appearances last August, both against the Rays. He gave up one run over two innings. The right-hander started last year in Double-A.

De La Rosa, who had a 1.97 ERA in 47 games for Montgomery in 2010, made his major league debut in 2011. In 12 games for Tampa Bay over the last two years, he had a 10.95 ERA. The Rays removed him from their 40-man roster this winter.

Niemann went hunting for spring success

Jeff Niemann, thought to be an avid hunter, had a dry offseason, netting just one turkey over the winter, but he also put aside his hunting wares to work on his pitching.

The right-hander, a Biscuit way back in 2005-06, was recovering from a series of injuries that cost him much of 2012.

A line drive broke Niemann's leg in May. With the Rays in a pennant race, Niemann hurridly returned in September. One 3 1/3-inning appearance later, he was shut down with shoulder inflammation.

"We were pushing it to the limit every day," Niemann said. "There was no time for anything but moving forward."

Niemann, for the third time in five years, is in a spring training battle for a spot in Tampa Bay's rotation. A decision looms Friday.

Myers marks return in Wednesday's lineups

Outfielder Wil Myers, Tampa Bay's top prospect, returns to the Triple-A lineup today after missing time with a sore wrist.

Here are the lineups for the higher-level minor league games the Rays are hosting against the Orioles.

TRIPLE-A
Jason Bourgeois lf, Rich Thompson cf, Wil Myers rf, Leslie Anderson 1b, Chris Gimenez c, Stephen Vogt dh, Tim Beckham 2b, Cole Figueroa 3b, Robinson Chirinos dh, Hak-Ju Lee ss
Bench: Vince Belnome, Brandon Guyer, Mike Sheridan
Pitchers: Alex Cobb*, tba

DOUBLE-A
Robi Estrada ss, Robby Price 2b (Taylor Motter in 6th), Todd Glaesmann lf, Cameron Seitzer 1b (dh in 6th), Mark Thomas c (Keith Castillo in 8th), Kevin Kiermaier cf, Greg Sexton dh (1b in 8th), Riccio Torrez 3b, Mayo Acosta dh
Pitchers: Jamey Wright*, Kyle Farnsworth*, Albert Suarez, Zach Quate, Braulio Lara

Barnese, Cruz released by Rays

Nick Barnese and Joe Cruz, who each won nine games from 2011-12 for the Biscuits, were released today by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Barnese, 24, missed the first half of last year with a shoulder injury and finished 3-1 with a 5.72 ERA for the Biscuits. He was 6-8 with a 3.76 ERA in 2011.

Cruz, 24, was 6-6 with a 4.60 ERA last season after an injury-shortened 2011. Two years ago, he had an 8.43 ERA in 11 starts before a shoulder injury.

Both were drafted in 2007. Barnese went in the third round and Cruz the 30th.

Guerrieri wants 2012 momentum to continue, with more wins

Taylor Guerrieri established himself as a top-tier prospect for the Tampa Bay Rays last year with an impressive debut at short-season Hudson Valley. This year, he might win a few more games, too.

The right-handed pitcher had a tremendous season on a championship team. But because of severe pitch limits (5 innings, 75 pitches at best), he recorded just one win.

"I'm going to be on a pitch count again this year, just not as strict," Guerrieri said. "Maybe I'll get a few wins."

The 20-year-old, who is headed to low-Class A Bowling Green this year, had a 1.04 ERA in 52 innings. He gave up just 35 hits, walked four and struck out 45.

"It was a great year, not only individually but team-wise," Guerrieri said. "I've never played on a team that had so much fun."

Guerrieri is trying to prepare for the early-season Kentucky weather, too.

After going without long sleeves for a cold morning workout Tuesday, he donned them early Wednesday. Temperatures were in the 40s.

"I'm from South Carolina, so I'm not used to it, but I've got to get used to it," Guerrieri said. "I hear Bowling Green is pretty cold this time of year."

Sight unseen: 13 players yet to be viewed this week

The Rays made a list and I've checked it twice, but there are 13 minor league players I've yet to see in uniform this week.

Obviously, I could just be missing them, which is why there are so many pitchers listed below. Or they're hurt.

Also, they're lower-level guys, which means chances are I wouldn't recognize their faces. With the cold, many players are wearing jackets and those cover their uniform number and name. (There's one player wearing No. 87 without a name on his jersey.)

Pitchers -- Jeff Ames, Kevin Brandt, Isaac Gil, Jordan Harrison, Brandon Henderson, Jorge Rodriguez, Wilking Rodriguez, Trevor Shull, Eliazer Suero, Jon Weaver
Infielders -- Brandon Martin, Juniel Querecuto
Outfielder -- Jiminson Natera

Update: Make that 12. I've seen Natera now.
Further update: It's down to four.

I've been told that the nameless No. 87 is freshly acquired catcher Curt Casali.

VIDEO: Former Biscuits catcher Matt Spring

And here's video of an interview with Matt Spring.

Oh, and I never posted links to Monday's videos of Matt Moore and Evan Longoria, did I?

Matt Spring sighting nets baby talk

Matt Spring, a popular figure during his four years with the Biscuits from 2007-10, is back with the Boston Red Sox. Spring and wife Meredith added a son this offseason. Read about it here.

Also, talked to Alex Cobb about how he's a bit sturdier this year after gaining 10 pounds this offseason. He's also more comfortable in his position with the Rays.

Quate passed on football for wedding date

Zach Quate let his football tickets go to waste.

An avid N.C. State fan whose family has season tickets, Quate could have checked out the Wolfpack before his November wedding.

Quate and Paige Brantley, high school sweethearts, were married Nov. 3 in suburban Raleigh, N.C. Instead of first seeing his Wolfpack, Quate went straight to the ceremony.

"She would have killed me," Quate said.

Quate didn't miss much, either, and save your ACC jokes. The Wolfpack suffered a 33-6 homecoming loss to Virginia.

Rays add catcher, allow Tigers to keep Lobstein

Left-handed pitcher Kyle Lobstein, who ended last year with the Biscuits before being taken in the major league Rule 5 draft, is staying with the Detroit Tigers.

To be able to send Lobstein to the minor leagues while retaining his rights, the Tigers have traded minor league catcher Curt Casali to the Rays.

It would appear Casali will go to high-Class A Charlotte to begin the season. The 24-year-old hit .270 with nine home runs and 43 RBIs in 93 games between low-Class A West Michigan and high-Class A Lakeland last year.

Monday's minor league lineups vs. Twins

Vettleson, Glaesmann working with Double-A group

Here's who I saw on each field during this morning's minor league workout. At this point, it's rare for a player to move up from one work list to play with a higher-level team, and players regularly move down.

Biggest surprises to me would be about half of the Double-A position players. Outfielders Drew Vettleson and Todd Glaesmann and infielders Ryan Brett and Cameron Seitzer aren't expected to break camp for Montgomery.

These lists are obviously incomplete, and I'll update it with whatever I see later today, and unofficial.

Rays release Weglarz

First baseman Nick Weglarz, demoted from Tampa Bay's major league camp March 11, has been released by the Rays. The 25-year-old hit .239 in 109 games last year at Double-A Akron.

Goodgion off Tampa Bay spring minor league roster

Left-handed pitcher Luke Goodgion, drafted last year, is no longer listed on the Tampa Bay Rays' minor league spring roster.

Goodgion is the only player on the March 8 roster that's not on the most-recent roster, which is dated Friday.

Goodgion had a 1.80 ERA and two saves in 12 appearances last year for the GCL Rays. He was a 33rd-round pick from Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston, Idaho.

The stats page includes players on a team's disabled list until they are activated. Same principle applies below.

Well, 230 players listed in the minor leaguers' section of Tampa Bay's media guide this year. That does not include those on the 40-man roster or those non-roster invitees to major league camp. (Alphabetized by first name because my spreadsheet likes it that way.)
