2014 Biscuits lose 2 in Rays-Nationals trade

The 2014 Biscuits took a hit with a trade between the Rays and Washington Nationals today.

Outfielder Drew Vettleson and left-handed pitcher Felipe Rivero, both expected to be with Montgomery this year, went to the Nationals in a four-player deal.

The Rays picked up right-hander Nathan Karns from Washington in exchange for major league catcher Jose Lobaton, Rivero and Vettleson. Lobaton is a former Biscuit.

Rivero finished 9-7 with a 3.40 ERA and Vettleson hit .274 with 62 RBIs at high-Class A Charlotte.

Vettleson was the 2012 BCS/RPI champion (Biscuit Crumbs Standings/Rays Player Indicator) at low-Class A Bowling Green. Vettleson hit .275 with 15 home runs and 69 RBIs for the Hot Rods. Rivero played in the 2012 All-Star Futures Game.

Karns, a 12th-round draft pick in 2009, was the Nats' minor league pitcher of the year in 2012. Last year, he made three major league appearances and was 10-6 with a 3.26 ERA at Double-A Harrisburg.

Lobaton joined the Biscuits in 2009 when the Rays added him in trade from San Diego. He had a .249 average in 100 games for Tampa Bay last year.
