Biscuits getting new trainer

The Rays have promoted Durham trainer Mark Vinson (pictured at right, from his younger days) to be their minor-league rehabilitation and athletic training coordinator, which means Biscuits trainer Jimmy Southard is moving up to the Bulls. The Biscuits will have Joel Smith as their trainer this year.

Smith will be in his fifth season in the Tampa Bay organization. He was at high-Class A Vero Beach last year, his first stop at a full-season affiliate. Vinson was with the Biscuits in 2006 before Southard took over in 2007.

The Rays also named minor-league hitting coordinator Steve Livesey their player development man of the year and Fred Repke their top scout. Repke is in charge of scouting Southern California and signed Rays pitcher Jamie Shields and third baseman Evan Longoria.
