Scelfo, Murrill, Kubiak released by Rays

The Rays released three players today, including two who were in line to start the season for the Biscuits.

Outfielders Anthony Scelfo and Chris Murrill and right-handed pitcher David Kubiak were dropped by the organization. Scelfo and Murrill were expected to be with Montgomery.

Scelfo hit .253 last year, his second at high-Class A Charlotte. He was an eighth-round draft pick in 2008 from Tulane, where he also played quarterback.

Murrill was a .279 hitter in just 45 games last season for the Stone Crabs. The Mobile native was a 35th-rounder in 2009.

Kubiak was a 36th-round pick last year and had a 3.20 ERA in 25 1/3 innings between the GCL Rays and Princeton.

O'Conner down with hip soreness

Catcher Justin O'Conner, a first-round draft pick in 2010, has been out with hip soreness and is undergoing further tests, assistant farm director Chaim Bloom said.

O'Conner, who celebrates his 20th birthday today, had surgery a year ago on the other hip, but the Rays don't think it's related to his current problems.

O'Conner wasn't expected to make a full-season roster anyway. He hit .157 with Princeton last season.

Sheridan set to play 5 innings vs. Orioles

Mike Sheridan, out of the minor league lineup since Monday, is back today and playing first base for five innings in the Double-A game. Today is the final spring games for the minor leaguers and they're playing the Orioles. Higher levels in Sarasota and Class A's in Port Charlotte. On Sunday, the Rays play 10 a.m. intrasquad games before scattering.

Taking this thing to Fort Myers

Leaving for the drive to Fort Myers. Once I arrive and the games get started, check for sporadic tidbits at the Twitter (@AStacyLong).

Infielder Cedeno released by Rays

Third baseman Julio Cedeno, who spent the last two years at Bowling Green, has been released by the Rays. Cedeno hit .261 in 104 games two years ago and .246 in 66 games last year for the Hot Rods. He's the only deletion on the latest minor league roster.

Tampa Bay still has 79 pitchers, 19 catchers, 34 infielders and 21 outfielders in minor league camp.

Bortnick down for 5 innings in Double-A lineup

Second baseman Tyler Bortnick is in the Double-A lineup today with the Rays playing minor league exhibitions against the Minnesota Twins. The higher-level teams will play in Fort Myers with the Class A's in Port Charlotte. Bortnick has been out with a injury he declined to specify and is expected to be in Montgomery's opening day lineup.

See Twitter for occasional update

Heading back out to the fields to see the higher-level games against the Orioles. For sporadic updates, check Twitter @AStacyLong.

Recovering Bortnick says he'll be ready opening day

Second baseman Tyler Bortnick, expected to be an opening day starter for the Biscuits, is currently out with an injury, though he said he'll break camp on time.

"I'll be ready to go," Bortnick said. "Yes, sir."

Bortnick declined to give details of the injury. Otherwise, he said, it's been a good spring.

"I've been hitting the ball well and seeing it well," he said. "I'm ready to get the season underway."

The 24-year-old, a 16th-round draft pick in 2009 from Coastal Carolina, hit .306 and had a .428 on-base percentage last year at high-Class A Charlotte. Bortnick also swiped an organization-best 43 bases.

Bornick landed one of Tampa Bay's spots in the Arizona Fall League, where he was named one of the league's "rising stars."

"I was honored and blessed that the Rays picked me to go," Bortnick said. "Being able to compete further enhanced my thinking that I could play in the big leagues. I never doubted I could, but it was an extreme boost of confidence for me to go and play well."

6 have been absent from lineups all week

Comparing the most-recent minor league roster with the lineups the last four days, there are six position players who have yet to appear. When I use the word "lineups," I'm referring to Double-A, Triple-A and the two Class A's.

Catchers
Jesus Araiza (I've seen him, in uniform)
Omar Narvaez
Justin O'Conner
Ian Tomkins (believe I saw him and, if I did, it had to be in uniform)
Infielder
Leonardo Reginatto (he played in EXT game Wednesday)
Outfielder
Brett Nommensen (I've seen him, in workout clothes)

THURSDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE: Saw Araiza, Narvaez, Tomkins and Nommensen in uniform.

Figueroa, after double-duty day, back in Triple-A

Cole Figueroa, after DH'ing in a Class A game Wednesday, is in the Triple-A lineup today. One factor in his Class A time Wednesday may have been his duties Wednesday night. He was in uniform for Tampa Bay's major league game with Pittsburgh.

The minor leaguers face the Orioles again today with the higher levels in Port Charlotte and the Class A games in Sarasota.

TRIPLE-A -- Coon rf, Beckham ss, Guyer cf, Vogt dh, Mangini dh, Miranda 1b, Anderson lf, Wrigley 3b, Ashley c, Figueroa 2b

DOUBLE-A -- Lee ss, Robby Price 2b (Estrada in 8th), Kang rf (Scelfo in 6th), Thomas dh, Velasquez cf, Sexton 3b, Salem lf, Tinoco 1b, Murrill dh, Albernaz c (Castillo in 8th)

HIGH-CLASS A -- Mahtook cf, Guevara 2b (Morillo in 8th), Dietrich ss (Motter in 6th), Torrez 3b (Gonzalez in 8th), Wunderlich 1b (Alexander in 8th), Acosta c (Alejandro Torres in 8th), Bailey dh, Rogers dh (lf in 6th), Lyerly rf, Morrison lf (dh in 6th)

Stopper hit on forearm, leaves; nothing serious

Tampa Bay's injury-plagued spring added another scare Wednesday night when closer Fernando Rodney took a line drive off the right forearm.

It's been diagnosed as a contusion and doesn't appear serious. The liner came off Alex Presley's bat in the ninth inning of Tampa Bay's 6-4 win over Pittsburgh and appeared to hit Rodney just below the elbow.

The Rays are already shorthanded with outfielders B.J. Upton, Desmond Jennings and Sam Fuld, shortstop Reid Brignac and catcher Robinson Chirinos all ailing.

Fleming, Reid won't make Rays roster

The Rays just announced two moves and that relief pitchers Marquis Fleming and Ryan Reid will not make the major league team. Reliever Brandon Gomes was optioned to Durham and catcher Chris Gimenez was reassigned to the minors. Fleming and Reid not making the team is not a surprise.

Upton will start year on DL

Outfielder B.J. Upton said he'll start the season on the disabled list. He doesn't expect to miss more than a few weeks and hopes his return is much sooner.

“There's no timetable, no finish line for when I get better,” Upton said. “When I'm ready to go, I'm ready to go.”

3 stories written; now to fields

I put the time to good use. Look for a story on Jeremy Hellickson in Thursday's editions and for Alex Cobb and Emeel Salem after that. I'm still pondering the order. Headed to the fields now. For sporadic updates on the Class A games today, see my Twitter feed @AStacyLong.

Mahtook turns to right in high-A game

The minor leaguers play Boston again today with the upper levels in Fort Myers and the Class A's in Port Charlotte. Cole Figueroa is the DH in the high-Class A game, likely just to get extra at-bats. He hit .283 for the Biscuits last year. Mikie Mahtook is in right field in the high-A game. He was the starting right fielder at LSU as a sophomore, though he's more known as a center fielder.

TRIPLE-A -- Beckham dh, Brignac ss, Guyer rf, Vogt c, Mangini 3b, Miranda 1b, Wrigley lf, Ashley dh, Coon cf, O'Malley 2b (Luna on bench)

DOUBLE-A -- Lee ss (Estrada in 8th), Velasquez cf, Price 2b, Thomas c (Albernaz in 8th), Kang rf (Scelfo in 8th), Sexton 1b, Salem lf (dh in 6th), Tinoco 3b, Morrison dh (lf in 6th), Castillo dh

HIGH-CLASS A -- Rogers lf, Guevara 2b, Dietrich ss, Mahtook rf, Wunderlich 1b, Torrez dh, Figueroa dh, Motter 3b, Bailey c, Kiermaier cf (no subs listed)

LOW-CLASS A -- Brett 2b, Hager dh (ss in 6th), Glaesmann lf, Vettleson rf, Goeddel 3b, Malm 1b, Carter cf, Rice c, Segovia dh, Querecuto ss (dh in 6th)

Skipping upper-level games today

Planning to stay in Port Charlotte and watch the Class A games today before the major leaguers host the Pirates tonight. I'll miss the upper-level teams playing in Fort Myers.

First, I need the time that I would have wasted driving to catch up on writing. Second, had I gone to Fort Myers, I would have battled game traffic getting back to Charlotte Sports Park. Hope everyone understands. (Lineups coming when I get them.)

Minor league games about to begin

For sporadic minor league exhibition updates, see the Twitter page @AStacyLong.

O'Malley at shortstop in Triple-A game

The minor leaguers play the Boston Red Sox farmhands today with the higher levels in Port Charlotte and the lowers in Fort Myers. Obviously, this could change. Reid Brignac said he's playing in a minor league game, but he's not on the lineup at the moment.

Shawn O'Malley is in the Triple-A game at shortstop ... at the moment. He played just second base last year with the Biscuits.

TRIPLE-A -- O'Malley ss (Beckham in 7th), Guyer cf, Vogt dh, Mangini 3b, Molina c (Wendt in 8th), Miranda 1b, Anderson lf, Ashley dh, Figueroa 2b, Coon rf (Murrill in 7th)

DOUBLE-A -- Lee ss, Morrison lf (Scelfo in 6th), Price 2b (Estrada in 8th), Thomas dh, Wunderlich 1b (Tinoco in 7th), Sexton 3b (Cedeno in 8th), Salem dh (CF in 6th), Velasquez rf, Kiermaier cf (DH in 6th), Albernaz c (Acosta in 6th)

Davis, Niemann accept decision

Wade Davis said he understood the decision to send him to the bullpen, Jeff Niemann said he has to pitch well to remain a starter, and both said it won't affect their relationship. They'll remain friends and still help each other.

"We're not going to change," Niemann said. "It's not going to change one bit how we go about our business."

Davis said he still will follow the plan he stated Sunday where "if it's me, I'll go down there and kick (butt), too."

"We've been preparing for it," Davis said. "Me and Niemann both prepared for whatever might happen. I'll just roll with it."

Of course, the Rays could reverse course, if Niemann struggles or Davis dominates.

"You have to control what you can control," Niemann said. "You have to go out there and throw quality games."

Niemann in rotation; Davis to bullpen

Jeff Niemann will be in Tampa Bay's starting rotation and Wade Davis will work out of the bullpen to start the season, manager Joe Maddon says.

"We have confidence in both of those guys," Maddon said.

Davis has no career games as a reliever (a playoff game doesn't go on his career record), while Niemann has just eight relief appearances in his career. This spring, Davis has a 4.91 ERA in 18 1/3 innings, while Niemann has a 4.05 in 13 1/3, though Maddon said the decision was "not based primarily on spring training performance."

"Right now, we like the idea of Wade in the bullpen," Maddon said. "With these two, it's unusual to have that kind of quality involved in the decision-making process."

Davis will have an early-inning role, which "can get meatier," Maddon said.

"At the end of the day, we still consider him a starter," Maddon said. "It's not like you don't like Wade, but we have to make a decision. It's that close of a call because we think that much of both of these guys. ... We're going to try to make Wade into the best relief pitcher we possibly can."

Shelby released by Rays

Outfielder John Shelby has been released by the Tampa Bay Rays. Shelby came to the organization late last spring and played in 117 games with the Biscuits. It was his third straight season in the Southern League. Shelby made his Triple-A debut last season, too. The 26-year-old had a .269 average in six minor league seasons, including a .248 at Montgomery.

He's the only name missing on the minor league roster that's dated today compared to the roster dated Sunday.

Sheridan scratched from Double-A lineup

First baseman Mike Sheridan, a potential Biscuit this year, was scratched from today's Double-A lineup due to an undisclosed injury. After trying some extra stretching during batting practice this morning, he left the field with a trainer. It's not expected to keep him out long.

A little bird told me ...

OK, I've put it off, I guess, long enough. I've had an account for almost a year and have done virtually nothing with it. Now is as good a time as any to formally unveil my Twitter account @AStacyLong.

The usual spring in-game updates will be posted there. Once the season starts, I do not plan to send in-game updates, unless there's an overriding reason (injury, no-hitter, etc.) and, even then, I'll have much more information here on the blog.

While the blog (mostly) stays on point with baseball-related things, the Twitter will include all of my other reporting responsibilities, too.

Cobb brought rib remnant home from hospital

Who's with me on this? Alex Cobb, whose season ended early last year after he had surgery to remove a blood clot and part of a rib that was causing it, still has the souvenir at home. It's about "the size of my pinkie," Cobb said, and he doesn't think it odd to have kept it.

"All the reporters think it's weird or something, but it's not," Cobb said. "My dad has it somewhere at the house."

Jennings, Brignac in Triple-A lineup

Ailing major leaguers Desmond Jennings and Reid Brignac are scheduled to play in the Rays' Triple-A exhibition game today against Minnesota.

Here are Tampa Bay's lineups for today's minor league games. The higher-level teams host the Orioles, while the Class A's travel to Sarasota. For those unfamiliar with it, minor league spring games have relaxed rules. A team might bat 10 (or 11) players, switch the DH around, etc.

TRIPLE-A -- Jennings dh, Brignac ss, Guyer cf, Vogt dh, Miranda dh, Wrigley 1b, Ashley c, O'Malley 2b, Velasquez rf, Sexton 3b, Kang lf (subs Figueroa, Anderson, Shelby, Alejandro Torres)

DOUBLE-A -- Lee ss, Bortnick 2b (Estrada in 8th), Beckham dh, Sheridan 1b, Thomas c (Segovia 8th), Price 3b (Cedeno 8th), Acosta dh, Salem cf, Tinoco lf (Scelfo 6th), Murrill rf

HIGH-A -- Morrison dh, Guevara 2b (Gonzalez 8th), Dietrich (Martin 8th), Torrez 3b, Vettleson rf, Mahtook cf, Malm 1b (Alexander 8th), Bailey c (Bourdon 8th), DePew dh, Glaesmann lf

LOW-A -- Brett 2b (Soriano 8th), Hager ss (dh in 6th), Motter 3b (Eierman 8th), Seitzer 1b (Flores 8th), Carter cf, Rice c (Hernandez 8th), Sale dh (lf in 6th), Lyerly lf (dh in 6th), Querecuto dh (ss in 6th), Harris rf (Dixon in 6th)

Friedman: Bush likely done with Rays

Matt Bush, who pitched for the Biscuits last year and who faces serious charges for a DUI last week, is likely finished with the Rays, team general manager Andrew Friedman just said.

Bush was due to go to Triple-A Durham this season before last week's wreck in which he's accused of running over a 72-year-old motorcyclist, fleeing the scene and having a blood-alcohol content more than twice Florida's legal limit. Bush has had previous well-publicized alcohol-related incidents before the Rays signed him in 2010. The 26-year-old went on Tampa Bay's 40-man major league roster a year ago.

"I think it's safe to say that he's not going to play for us on the field," Friedman said. "Even that, with the ongoing criminal investigation, with all of the different dynamics at play, it's hard to talk about the 40-man spot and everything else. Until things advance more, it's difficult to know exactly which way we're going to be able to go."

Albernaz sent down, a "big part" of Rays' success

Catcher Craig Albernaz, a Biscuit for part of five of the last six seasons, was among five players sent to minor league camp today by the Rays. The move was no surprise. This was Albernaz's fourth major league spring training.

"He's been a big part of our success just by what he does on a daily basis," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "He's a lot of fun to be around. He doesn't complain about the workload.

"This guy has coach written all over him."

The other cuts were pitchers Jhonny Nunez and Romulo Sanchez, infielder Matt Mangini and outfielder Brad Coon.

Davis confident, if he heads to bullpen

Wade Davis, who is dueling with Jeff Niemann for a spot in Tampa Bay's rotation, said today that he would embrace a relief role, if Niemann gets the starting nod.

"I'll go down there and kick (butt), too," Davis said.

Niemann 'bucks' trend at his Texas ranch

Jeff Niemann finally broke through this offseason at his 50-acre Texas ranch. He bagged his first buck, first turkey and "a few hogs, too," he said. "It was a good year."

Niemann, who harvested a nine-pointer, said he hadn't heavily hunted his ranch until this year. He's an avid outdoorsman.

"I was just enjoying being out there," Niemann said. "That may have been my first buck, but I've shot some does. That was the first boy."

Friendly fire: Jennings, Brignac still spar over BCS

It still doesn't take much to get Desmond Jennings and Reid Brignac started over January's national championship football game. The two Rays -- and former Biscuits -- still hold major memories how one's favorite team beat the other.

They watched the game together and, Jennings joked, Brignac said little after the first few minutes. Jennings' Alabama Crimson Tide beat Brignac's LSU Tigers 21-0.

Today, both are on Tampa Bay's injured list and are optimistic they'll soon return to the team's lineup. Both played in a minor league intrasquad game today.

Brignac, suffering from plantar fasciitis in his right foot, flew out, struck out and started a double play. It was his first game in a week and he said any pain he felt was not overwhelming. "For sure, it's tolerable," Brignac said.

Jennings is down with a shoulder injury from a March 14 outfield collision with B.J. Upton and hasn't played in a week. He didn't bat, but ran the bases (one steal, one run). He also played defense, though he's not allowed to throw yet. What if a ball had been hit to him? "I would have caught it. ... I'd have done something," he said.

Espinosa no longer part of Rays minor league camp

We’ve arrived at Charlotte Sports Park. The minor leaguers have morning workouts today and get the afternoon off, while the major leaguers host the Miami Marlins.

Comparing the minor league roster from March 9 to the most-recent one, dated today, here’s who has departed or who has been added from major league camp. Left-handed pitcher Sergio Espinosa, who was with the Biscuits for part of the last two seasons, is a noteable deletion.

Report: Pridie to be suspended for drugs

Former Biscuits outfielder Jason Pridie, now with the A's, will be suspended for 50 games after testing positive for a recreational drug, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
