Perez has a degree from Columbia in American studies, finished the creative writing program and lists Robert Creeley and John Ashbery among his favorite poets. Poetry, Perez says, is where he goes when he wants "displacement, contrast" from baseball. "The thick wilderness," Perez said, "of, say, late Ashbery can wrangle with the narrowness of competition."
