The Wetumpka and Tallassee baseball teams picked up victories this spring with a major leaguer in the other dugout.
Mariners reliever Steve Delabar was a coach for the John Hardin High (Ky.) Bulldogs before trying out for Seattle. The Seattle Times details Delabar's trek from a high school coach this spring to the major leagues this month.
The story mentions a 7 1/2-hour bus ride "to a tournament in Alabama" on which Delabar was working out tryout details with the Mariners. That tournament was in Wetumpka, where John Hardin lost 7-4 to Wetumpka on April 2 and 15-14 to Tallassee on April 4.
Delabar, 28, started the season at high-Class A before promotions to Double-A Jackson, Triple-A Tacoma and, just last week, to the majors. (He pitched at Riverwalk on June 25, recording two outs with a hit and two walks.)
