Signed by Rays, indy pitcher going to Crabs

The Rays are adding a pitcher from an independent league and sending him to high-Class A Charlotte.

Right-hander Matt Nevarez, with the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association, has had his contract purchased by Tampa Bay.

Nevarez had 45 strikeouts and a 3.08 ERA in 26 1/3 innings. He was 3-2 with seven saves in 25 games. The 25-year-old was with Double-A Corpus Christi in the Houston organization the last two years.

The Crabs currently have a full roster, so they'll need a corresponding move.
