Game 2 vs. Braves

It's Game 2 of the Southern League playoff series between the Biscuits and the Braves, and here's a vote for a quick game. Both teams are leaving for Montgomery after the game and me, too. Pencil everyone in for about a 3 a.m. arrival.

Mississippi reliever Michael Nix, an Auburn native, has plans for after Saturday's 4:05 p.m. Game 3 at Riverwalk. He's searching for tickets for his teammates to the Auburn-South Florida football game.

Also, a little more about Rhyne Hughes and his trip home. He and Braves third baseman Van Pope are longtime rivals. They played against each other in the Mississippi state baseball playoffs as juniors and seniors. (The final meeting was the equivalent of a state semifinal series.) They faced off in a Mississippi junior college championship. Now, they're back at it in the Southern League.

The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs is pleased to announce that Stacy Long of the Montgomery Advertiser has been named its Sportswriter of the Year, as voted upon by the league’s general managers and radio broadcasters.

Long’s passion for baseball has been evident to his readers throughout his four-year tenure as beat writer for the Montgomery Biscuits. A meticulous compiler of statistical data, Long combines historical perspective with colorful detail in his unparalleled coverage of baseball in Montgomery. He also connects with fans through frequent blogs, keeping readers informed about Biscuits happenings and players past and present.

"To put it succinctly, Stacy covers our minor league Montgomery Biscuits as well as or better than any writer covers the big league clubs," Montgomery Advertiser sports editor L.C. Johnson said. "He puts that much heart and effort into it and takes a lot of pride in doing it, and our readers are the benefactors of that."

A resident of Montgomery who attended the University of Alabama, Long has been a valuable asset since joining the Montgomery Advertiser in 2002. Johnson compared Long to a "Swiss Army knife" when conveying his versatility as a writer, copy editor and designer.

Long joins a select list of outstanding sportswriters that have won the award, including current Southern League beat writers Jeff Elliott, Mark McCarter, David Paschall and Doug Segrest.
