Former Biscuits pitcher Alex Colome has been suspended for 50 games after testing positive for a steroid.
Colome made his major league debut and suffered an elbow injury last year.
The right-hander pitched in a minor league intrasquad game Sunday. He was to begin the season with Triple-A Durham.
Colome had a 2.25 ERA in three starts for Tampa Bay last year. He won a combined 11 games for the Biscuits in 2011-12. The 25-year-old is the 16th Rays minor leaguer to draw a drug suspension since January 2012.
As he left the field Sunday, Colome was unusually glum. Except for before the games in which he's scheduled to pitch, Colome is normally quick to smile and upbeat. He only said "Hi, how are you?" to me before looking back to the ground.
