Jiovanni Mier, a high school shortstop from California, was projected to go to the Rays in one of the early mock drafts. He didn't make it that far and went 21st to the Houston Astros.
There have been 13 pitchers taken in the first 21 picks. Most projections had the Rays taking a position player.
