Rays sign 2 former major-leaguers; Switzer to Boston

Former major-leaguers Andy Cannizaro and John Rodriguez have have signed minor-league contracts with the Rays.

Cannizaro, a 29-year-old infielder, played at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last year, but had a 13-game stay with the New York Yankees in September 2006. Rodriguez, an outfielder, was at Class AAA Memphis until a July knee injury last year. He was in the majors with St. Louis the previous two seasons. Rodriguez turns 30 this month.

SATURDAY UPDATE: Former Biscuits pitcher Jon Switzer has signed with the Boston Red Sox, according to the good folks at draysbay.com.

I had heard he was going to sign and actually looked at the MLB.com transactions about 1 p.m. today. Oh, well.

I understand he has an opt-out clause in the contract and can ask for his release at the end of spring training.

And, Bubba, do you not like Jorge Cantu? He did wear the butter and blue, albeit for a rehab stay. =)
