Catcher Jose Lobaton, claimed off waivers by the Rays from the San Diego Padres, is coming to the Biscuits, who have demoted catcher Nevin Ashley to Class A Charlotte.
Lobaton (left) had a .241 average with Triple-A Portland and played in seven games in the major leagues this month. He made his major-league debut July 5. The Padres designated him for assignment Tuesday. Lobaton, 24, is an eighth-year pro who reached Double-A for the first time last year.
To add Lobaton to their 40-man roster, the Rays are moving pitcher Troy Percival from the 15-day DL to the 60-day, according to the St. Petersburg Times.
Ashley was hitting .212 in 35 games with the Biscuits.
