Gardner: Near-brawl was over bunt single

Just finished writing the game story and I'll share that the near-brawl was over Kris Negron bunting for a single in the eighth in a seven-run game.

"I think some things were said there with Negron bunting,” Biscuits manager Billy Gardner said. “That’s not the style of play I would have incorporated with my club.

“I don’t think that’s the way to play it, and I know we play the game the right way here.”

Carolina manager David Bell was not immediately available for comment. He wasn't in his office or the open area of the visiting clubhouse after I talked to Gardner. I checked the field to see if he was there and checked his office again to no avail.

The Mudcats also sent a runner in the ninth inning. He reached second on defensive indifference.

"Doing that type of stuff and sending runners when we're playing behind them, I don't know if that's the right approach," Gardner said. "I know it's not the way we play."
