Iwamura injury looks serious

Rays second baseman Akinori Iwamura suffered a knee injury today -- and the major-league beat writers say it looks serious.

If so, Reid Brignac will stay in the majors and not return to Durham as scheduled. That could trigger a wave of promotions upward.

5 p.m. UPDATE: The major-league writers both say Iwamura will have an MRI in St. Pete on Monday and "almost certainly" is headed to the DL. He's on crutches and was "saying goodbye" to his teammates.

The Durham Bulls have signed free agent 2B/SS Henry Mateo. The switch hitting Mateo, 32, played in 13 games for the Toledo Mud Hens last season, hitting .228/.241/.351 in 57 AB's.
