Elliot Johnson has been told he won't make Tampa Bay's 25-man Opening Day roster. For the Rays to send him to Triple-A Durham, he has to clear waivers. Any team could claim him, but he'd have to go on that team's active major-league roster, too.
It spares Johnson from another few days of wondering while the Rays play an exhibition game Friday at Tropicana Field and another Saturday in Durham.
"It's nice for them to go ahead and take care of this now," Johnson said.
He was 0-for-1 Thursday to drop his spring average to .267.
"I didn't play really all that great" this spring, Johnson said. "I know I can play better. It was a stressful spring."
