Darin Downs threw 5 2/3 shutout innings to help the Montgomery Biscuits beat the Mississippi Braves 2-1 on Monday.
Downs (2-0) gave up two hits over 5 2/3 innings before leaving after being hit in the leg by a comebacker. Dane De La Rosa worked 1 1/3 innings before Paul Phillips pitched the final two for a save.
The Biscuits scored in the first when Emeel Salem hit a leadoff double and came in on a Matt Fields groundball. In the fourth, Greg Sexton singled and scored on a John Matulia single.
Mississippi scored in the ninth. Orlando Mercado singled home Mauro Gomez, who reached out a hit batsman with two outs. With the potential tying run at third base, Concepcion Rodriguez struck out to end it.
