Mason shakes stick ... and makes contact

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is joy in Mudville - mighty Mason did NOT strike out.

Former Biscuits pitcher Chris Mason stepped to the plate for the first time as a professional Saturday. The biggest surprise is he didn't whiff.

Mason was 0-for-2 with a groundout to third and a flyout to right for the Binghamton Mets. His mighty cuts came against top Phillies prospect Kyle Drabek.

Chris Mason was actually a decent hitter in college(he played 3B at NC-Greensboro. Hit .324/.352/.498 his junior year. Still, impressive that he was able to make contact against a prospect like Drabek in his first ABs in four years.

So was Heath Rollins at Winthrop. When the Rays messed up their lineup and Andy Sonnanstine had to bat, I wrote about both ... and the staff's desire for a little batting practice.

That was the first time Mason had swung in anger in four years, so definite kudos for making contact -- plus the Drabek factor.
