Rhyne Hughes traded to Baltimore

Former Biscuits first baseman Rhyne Hughes has been sent to the Baltimore Orioles to complete the trade that brought catcher Gregg Zaun to the Rays.

Hughes has been assigned to Triple-A Norfolk.

He had a .313 average with 22 doubles, seven home runs, 26 RBIs and 31 runs scored for Triple-A Durham. The 25-year-old was promoted from Montgomery in early June after hitting .252 with 15 home runs and 46 RBIs.

Hughes won a batting title in the Florida State League in 2007 but admittedly struggled last year with the Biscuits and hit .268. He rallied in the Arizona Fall League with a .394 average and a league-high 20 extra-base hits.

g The Rays also recalled shortstop Reid Brignac from Durham and demoted relief pitcher Jeff Bennett.

g Thirdly, the Rays announced signing four more of their Top 10 picks, including fourth-rounder Lucas Bailey, a Georgia high school catcher who had signed with Auburn. (Best place to track all of that, see the raysprospects.com 2009 draft link to the right.) The first- and second-round picks are unsigned and the deadline is Monday.
