Carolina outfielder Dave Sappelt, the Southern League's leading hitter, won its most valuable player award and Jacksonville's Tom Koehler was named the top pitcher today.
Sappelt enters today with a .361 average and 62 RBIs in 89 games. His average is 26 points ahead of second place.
Koehler is 16-2 with a 2.71 ERA and has one start left. He's already the league's first 16-game winner since Dave Borkowski in 1998. and the league hasn't had someone hit 17 since a 19-game winner in 1989.
If Sappelt holds his current average, he'll have the highest since Jason LaRue's .365 in 1998.
