Montgomery's Omar Luna says he'll keep track of how Mississippi's Todd Cunningham does today as Cunningham tries to chase him down for the Southern League batting championship.
The Biscuits strategically put Luna on the bench today against Huntsville to hopefully preserve his two-point lead in the batting race. Mississippi plays at Mobile.
"Maybe I'll win a batting title," Luna said. "They asked me and I said I was OK with it. We're waiting on that guy."
If Luna (.314893) does not bat, Cunningham can win by going 3-for-3 (.3169), 3-for-4 (.3154) or finishing with four hits in less than nine at-bats. (If Cunningham goes 4-for-8, the two will have an absolute tie at 148-for-470.)
"Winning a batting title is a really big deal," Biscuits manager Billy Gardner said. "It's up to the other guy to really do well to overtake him. I think this is the best way to go and something he wanted to do."
Pensacola's Josh Fellhauer was 2-for-4 today and finished with a .313 average.
