Former Tide footballer among 3 Rods suspended

Three Bowling Green Hot Rods, including a former Alabama football player, were suspended today for failing drug tests.

Pitchers Justin Woodall and Charlie Cononie and infielder Ryan Brett were suspended for positive tests for methamphetamine and an amphetamine, according to Major League Baseball's announcement.

Woodall, a safety on Alabama's 2009 national championship football team, and Cononie made considerably longer-than-usual appearances Wednesday. Woodall made his first career start and threw four innings. Cononie followed with a season-high five innings.

Brett was a midseason Midwest League All-Star and has played in 100 games this year.

The Hot Rods announced that pitcher Sean Bierman was promoted from short-season Hudson Valley, a move that was hinted at online Wednesday night. Also, shortstop Ben Kline will join Bowling Green from the Gulf Coast League.
