Wednesday: Biscuits 5, Braves 0

Enny Romero and Braulio Lara combined on a six-hitter in the Biscuits' 5-0 win over the Mississippi Braves on Wednesday.

Romero (11-6) threw seven innings, giving up five hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Romero tied Jake Thompson for the team lead in wins, which is tied for the third most in franchise history.

It's the 12th shutout posted by the Biscuits this season.

Mikie Mahtook and Curt Casali had a part in each of Montgomery's scoring rallies.

Mahtook hit an RBI single in the first inning, reached base four times and scored twice. Casali also reached base four times, scored and singled home Mahtook with the final run in the seventh inning.

Colla, after ab strain, to start Friday

Biscuits starter Michael Colla, after missing his last turn in the rotation, is scheduled to start Friday vs. Jacksonville.

Colla suffered an abdominal strain Aug. 9 at Tennessee, manager Billy Gardner said, and left with none out in the fourth inning. Colla threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and will be limited to 65 pitches Friday, Gardner said.

Shaffer on Florida State League team

Third baseman Richie Shaffer, in his first full professional season, made his first end-of-season All-Star team.

Shaffer, with the Charlotte Stone Crabs, was named to the Florida State League's team, the Stone Crabs announced today.

Shaffer has a .252 average with 11 home runs and 64 RBIs this season. He has a .310 on-base percentage and is slugging .402.

He was the 25th overall pick in the 2012 draft out of Clemson and hit .308 in 33 games last year for the New York-Penn League champion Hudson Valley Renegades.

The 22-year-old was the only Charlotte player picked, according to the Stone Crabs.

Matt Fields makes history at NW Arkansas

Former Biscuit Matt Fields hit his 30th home run Tuesday to set a franchise record at Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Not bad for a guy who, after playing for the Biscuits in 2010, decided to give up baseball and took a job at the Sea-Tac airport near Seattle.
