Rays sign Price; Mason has pink dye in hand

No. 1 overall pick David Price and the Rays have agreed to an $8.5 million, major-league contract, according to The Tampa Tribune.

The Tennessean says the deal includes a $5.6 million signing bonus and could reach a total value of $11.25 million.

“We are thrilled to add a player of David’s caliber to our organization," Rays general manager Andrew Friedman said in a release. “Not only was he the most outstanding amateur player in the country this year, we see him as one of the best pitching prospects to come out of the draft in some time. In addition to his remarkable talent, David’s character is exemplary. He is an important building block and a potential upper-echelon starting pitcher for many years.”

The Rays are creating room on the 40-man roster for Price by putting catcher Shawn Riggans on the 60-day DL. He was already out for the season with an elbow injury.

At Riverwalk Stadium, Chris Mason's dye supplier has uncovered the pink he plans to use Thursday for breast cancer awareness -- like in May when Major League Baseball had a day in which hitters used pink bats.

It's also Clayton Kershaw vs. Jake McGee in a matchup of top-tier minor-league left-handers.
