The Rays released left-handed pitcher James Houser today to sign right-hander Jeff Bennett to a major-league contract.
Houser was with Triple-A Durham and was 4-5 with a 5.16 ERA this year. He was with the Biscuits the last two seasons.
Bennett asked for and received his release Thursday from Atlanta. He had a 3.18 ERA in 33 games with the Braves and missed time with a broken left hand. Bennett will go to Tampa Bay, which made room on the 25-man major-league roster by demoting right-hander Joe Nelson to Durham.
