Iwamura back; Gomes out

The Devil Rays activated third baseman Akinori Iwamura from the disabled list today and sent outfielder/designated Jonny Gomes to Durham.

Iwamura was hitting .339 with 15 runs scored when he went on the DL April 24 with a right oblique strain.

Gomes, who has a .184 average in 19 games, and Rays manager Joe Maddon had a loud argument about the demotion, according to The St. Petersburg Times.

Gomes and infielder Jorge Cantu were the prime candidates for the demotion. Cantu has a .269 average but Iwamura's return gives the Rays another infielder.
