Mobile's Newby, Tennessee's Guyer win SL awards

The Biscuits helped make it a tough choice between Mobile starters, but the Southern League settled on right-hander Kyler Newby for its weekly pitching award today.

Newby threw five shutout innings Friday to beat Montgomery, which lost four of five games to the BayBears. Mobile starters were 4-0 with an 0.58 ERA in 31 innings in the series. Newby is 2-2 with a 3.73 ERA this year.

Tennessee outfielder Brandon Guyer was the top hitter. He was 11-for-21 with eight runs scored and eight RBIs over the last week. Guyer is hitting .310 with 47 runs scored and 32 RBIs this year. The Smokies start a series at Montgomery tonight.
