Hellickson lands dual AL awards for May

Former Biscuits pitcher Jeremy Hellickson has won the American League's pitcher of the month and rookie of the month for May.

Hellickson was 4-1 with a 1.36 ERA in five May starts, including his first career shutout, a four-hitter May 13 against Baltimore. He led AL rookies in May wins and tied for first among all pitchers. His ERA ranked third in the league for May.

The 24-year-old, who spent much of 2008 and 2009 with the Biscuits, is 6-3 with a 2.80 ERA this season and is scheduled to make his next start Saturday at Seattle.

He's the first player to win dual monthly awards since Milwaukee's Ryan Braun in July 2007. He's the first to be a month's top pitcher and rookie since Florida's Dontrelle Willis in June 2003.
