Rebels' 3-peat history rests with Barons

Montgomery Rebels fans might pull for the Birmingham Barons this week.

The Mobile BayBears, who are trying to become the first team to win three straight Southern League championships since the Rebels, will face the Barons in the final series.

Oddly, when the Rebels abandoned Montgomery after the 1980 season, they moved to Birmingham and became the Barons. The Rebels won three straight Southern League titles from 1975-77.

Birmingham, which is in the finals for the first time since 2002, won 7-4 at Tennessee on Monday in Game 5 of their semifinal series.

Championship series schedule ...
Wednesday: at Mobile, 7:05 p.m.
Thursday: at Mobile, 7:05 p.m.
Friday: at Birmingham, 7:05 p.m.
Saturday, if necessary: at Birmingham, 6:30 p.m.
Sunday, if necessary: at Birmingham, 6 p.m.
