Hot Rods' Rowan wins Rays' community service award

Hot Rods catcher Geoff Rowan won Tampa Bay's minor league community service award, the Hot Rods have announced.

The Rays, if they follow the same award as last year, will donate $2,500 to the charity of Rowan's choice.

Each of the top six teams in the Tampa Bay system nominate a player for the award, which is named for Erik Walker, a 2006 draft pick who died that October in a canoeing accident.

(I've asked about the other finalists. Last year, the Rays gave $500 to their favorite charities.)

Previous winners ...
2012: Montgomery's Joe Cruz
2011: Charlotte's Matt Hall
2010: Charlotte's Stephen Vogt
2009: Princeton's Ryan Wiegand
2008: Montgomery's Matt Spring*
2007: Vero Beach's Patrick Cottrell
