To make 40-man roster space for Russ Canzler, the Rays designated reliever Mike Ekstrom for assignment.
It's the second time they've DFA'd Ekstrom this year. He moved off the 40-man at the end of spring training after Evan Longoria was hurt and Tampa Bay needed space for infielder Ray Olmedo.
Ekstrom moved back on the 40-man in late July when the Rays made seemingly daily moves between the majors and Triple-A Durham. He made one appearance, July 31 at Seattle.
