Bateman signed by Rays, going to Durham

Relief pitcher Joe Bateman, released Tuesday by Double-A Midland, has been signed by the Tampa Bay Rays and is headed to Triple-A Durham. The move gives the Bulls 13 active pitchers at the moment, which would seem to indicate at least one will be demoted to help fill the gaps in Montgomery's roster.

Bateman was 7-0 with a 1.66 ERA in 76 innings for Durham last season. He was 6-2 with a 3.02 in 62 2/3 with the Bulls in 2009.

The 31-year-old started this year at Triple-A Sacramento in the Oakland system. He had a 5.40 ERA in 26 games before a demotion to Midland where he appeared in four games. After a three-run, two-inning Midland debut, Bateman totaled seven shutout innings before his release. (Opt-out, perhaps?)

Durham's 13: Baker, Buente, Cormier, Delaney, Ekstrom, Fleming, Moore, Paduch, Reid, Sonnanstine, Torra, Torres ... Bateman
