St. James graduate Brandon Kloess, in his first full week with the Birmingham Barons, won the Southern League's pitcher of the week award.
On Friday, in his second Double-A appearance, Kloess threw five shutout innings of one-hit ball. The 26-year-old right-hander made his Double-A debut July 10 and gave up one run over four innings.
Kloess started the year with high-Class A Winston-Salem and spent time at Triple-A Charlotte this season.
Carolina outfielder Denis Phipps was the top hitter. He was 14-for-30 with eight RBIs and seven runs scored for the week ending Sunday. Phipps has a .316 average this year.
