Rays catcher a hit in Venezuela

Catcher Oscar Hernandez of the Rays recently capped a record season with the Venezuelan Summer League's most valuable player award.

Hernandez, who turned 18 on July 9, set league records with a .402 average, 21 home runs and 66 RBIs this season. In 69 games, he had a .503 on-base percentage and a league-record .732 slugging percentage.

He had an RBI single Wednesday in the Rays' 7-2 win over Pittsburgh's team for league championship. Erick Vasquez doubled, walked three times and scored twice. Jose Paez singled twice, walked, had two RBIs and a run scored.
