Thursday: Biscuits 4, Smokies 2

Chris Archer collected both a date and a victory Thursday, throwing seven shutout innings in the Biscuits' 4-2 win over the Tennessee Smokies.

Archer, the prize in a “win a date” competition, allowed just four hits, walked three and struck out six. Sarah Kelly, a paralegal who lives in Lowndesboro, was the lucky winner of a date with Archer.

John Matulia hit a two-run home run to cap a three-run fourth inning for the Biscuits. Stephen Vogt doubled and scored in the sixth.

What two southern league teams go best with grape jelly?
Biscuits and Smokies, of course...

Matulia was READY!
When he came to bat in the fourth, it appeared that he was putting his feet in the box before the previous play had ended. I was just commenting "Wow, John cant wait to bat" when he drove the first pitch over the right field wall.

Frank De Los Santos pitched to two hitters in the 8th inning, surrendering a hit and a walk and being pulled without recording an out. It seems the leash on his bad efforts has gotten shorter than it was in the first half. Marquis Fleming began warming as soon as DeLos Santos fell behind the first hitter.

Fleming was a good fireman, allowing a hit and a run (charged to DeLosSantos) but preserving the lead. Fleming now has an impressive 13.2 Kper9innings, second on the team only to Matt Bush's 13.5. However Fleming has appeared in over 50 innings, where Bush has only 30 IP.

Ryan Reid got his first save closing the game out, but didnt exactly dominate. He gave up a run after a josh vitters double, a passed ball and an rbi groundout. He then got Nate Samson to fly out to end the game, and the Fightin 'Skits took a tough series from the Southern League North first half champs.

Cant wait to see how the series plays out when the Smokies come back in 18 days.
