Outfielder Rich Thompson, acquired from the Philadelphia organization today, is headed to the major leagues with the Rays. Tampa Bay put outfielder Brandon Guyer on the 15-day disabled list to create a spot on the active roster for Thompson. Pitcher Jeff Niemann went on the 60-day DL to create room on the 40-man roster for Thompson.
Thompson, 33, played in six major league games in 2004 with Kansas City and made one at-bat. That was April 20 in a 15-5 win at Cleveland. Thompson grounded into a double play.
