Sweeney promoted from Crabs; Sexton demoted

Matt Sweeney has been promoted and Greg Sexton demoted in a swap of third basemen between the Biscuits and high-Class A Charlotte.

Sweeney (right) was part of the Scott Kazmir trade last year with the Angels. The deal also brought Biscuits pitcher Alex Torres to the Rays.

Sweeney was hitting .264 with a team-high six home runs and 16 RBIs for the Stone Crabs. He was expected to start the year with Montgomery before being assigned to Charlotte.

Sweeney hit nine homers in 58 games at high-A Rancho Cucamonga last year before the trade. He missed all of 2008 with an ankle injury after an 18-homer year in low-A in '07. Baseball America ranks him No. 24 on its list of Tampa Bay prospects and lists him as the organization's top power hitter.

Sexton was hitting .212 with one homer and 13 RBIs for Montgomery. He leads the team with 19 walks.
