Max Scherzer, Arizona's first-round draft pick last year who signed just before this year's draft, has been promoted to Class AA Mobile and will start Friday at Riverwalk Stadium.
The Diamondbacks took Scherzer with the 11th overall pick last year. The right-handed pitcher, a client of super agent Scott Boras, didn't sign until just before the deadline to enter this year's draft. His $4.3 million major-league deal included a $3 million bonus and incentives could make the contract worth $5.85 million.
Scherzer played for the independent Fort Worth Cats while Boras and the Diamondbacks negotiated. After signing, Scherzer went to Class A Visalia and was 2-0 with an 0.53 ERA in 17 innings. He walked two and struck out 30.
The BayBears have also added pitcher Brooks Brown, who was the 34th overall pick last year. The former University of Georgia star was 6-3 with a 2.81 ERA in 14 games at Visalia. He'll start Saturday. Brown represented Visalia in Tuesday's California-Carolina League All-Star Game.
