Lobaton debut to wait; Stars lose Rottino

UPDATE: Lobaton hadn't arrived by 6 p.m., so he didn't get in any pregame work.

Catcher Jose Lobaton is scheduled to join the Biscuits today, but he isn't in the lineup for tonight's series finale with the Huntsville Stars. Lobaton -- pronounced Lobe-uh-tone -- gets a travel day to relocate from the San Diego Padres to Montgomery.

Lobaton, a switch-hitter, gives the Rays a little catching depth. He's also a former teammate of Durham catcher John Jaso from last winter in Venezuela with the Leones de Caracas. Lobaton hit .306 in 20 games and Jaso .271 in 16 games. Biscuits pitcher Rayner Oliveros and Durham pitcher Jorge Julio were also on the team.

It's non-waiver trade deadline day and the Stars didn't go untouched. First baseman Vinny Rottino was traded by the Brewers to the Los Angeles Dodgers for pitcher Claudio Vargas. Rottino has also played catcher and left field this series.

The deadline passed at 3 p.m. Friday, so when you note that Desmond Jennings isn't in today's lineup, you can also note he's still on Montgomery's roster.
