It's safe to say the Biscuits were stunned that Manny Ramirez had retired to avoid a reported 100-game drug suspension.
"That's crazy. I don't know what to say," said shortstop Tim Beckham , who was in major league camp this spring. He said Ramirez helped teach him about the game and was a positive influence in the clubhouse.
"Just his work ethic and how he went about his business," Beckham said. "He talked to everybody and wasn't a bad guy in the clubhouse. All that now is surprising."
Ramirez and outfielder Johnny Damon joined the Rays this year. They were both part of the 2004 curse-breaking, world champion Red Sox.
"You could see how much he and Damon meant to New England and that team," said Biscuits reliever Ryan Reid, a Maine native who was a Sox fan growing up. "They'll be in the history books there forever."
