Manny Ramirez retires

Manny Ramirez, the longtime major league star now with the Tampa Bay Rays, has announced his retirement, Jerry Crasnick reports. Ramirez was 1-for-17 with one RBI in five games with the Rays, though he missed a late spring training game and Thursday's game at the Chicago White Sox. He's a 12-time All-Star, a nine-time Silver Slugger winner and was starting his 19th major league season.

3:28 update: The Rays just released a statement that hinted at a drug issue involving Ramirez, who drew a 50-game suspension in 2009. Another violation would have meant sitting 100 games.

“The Tampa Bay Rays were informed today by the Commissioner’s Office that Manny Ramirez has decided to retire after being informed of an issue under the Drug Program. We are obviously surprised and disappointed by this news. We will have no further comment on this matter, and our fans and organization will carry on.”
