Rays minor league pitcher Taylor Guerrieri's Tommy John surgery was a sudden decision, minor league pitching coordinator Dick Bosman said, and he's confident Guerrieri will return as strong, if not stronger.
Guerrieri went to see Dr. James Andrews today and Andrews advised him that "rehab was not an option" because of where the soreness was, Bosman said.
"Dr. Andrews said, 'I'll see you in surgery in two hours,'" Bosman said. "'Let's go.'"
Bosman, who is with the Biscuits this week, had surgery in 2004 from Andrews and raves about him.
Bosman said that Guerrieri had "some arm slot issues" early in the season and his velocity had been diminished at times, but that he regularly told Bowling Green pitching coach Kyle Snyder that he was healthy.
Guerrieri's season has had "mixed reviews for me," Bosman said, "but then you start thinking about this. How long has this been bothering him, really?"
