Taylor Guerrieri, an elite pitching prospect for the Tampa Bay Rays who has played this year at low-Class A Bowling Green, is having Tommy John surgery today, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Guerrieri went on the Hot Rods' disabled list Sunday after leaving his last start July 15 following two innings. He's 6-2 with a 2.01 ERA in 67 innings this season, including a streak of 24 consecutive scoreless innings.
The Rays had carefully limited his innings this season. He pitched on at least five days' rest every start this year and his July 15 appearance was his first since July 1. Though the Futures Game picked Guerrieri, the Rays held him out.
Tommy John recovery time for a pitcher is normally around one full year.
Guerrieri was the 24th overall pick in the 2011 draft and debuted last year with 52 innings at short-season Class A Hudson Valley. Baseball America named him the top prospect last year in the New York-Penn League and ranked him third in the Tampa Bay organization before this season.
