Joe Van Meter, a right-handed pitcher released this month by the Texas Rangers, has signed with the Rays and will start tonight for the Biscuits.
Van Meter was 0-4 with a 7.56 ERA in six relief appearances for Double-A Frisco, where he last pitched Aug. 2.
The 24-year-old is in his fourth minor league season and was a 21st-round draft pick in 2010 out of VCU. He began this year at high-Class A Myrtle Beach and had a 3.48 ERA in 23 games. Van Meter reached Double-A last year and gave up seven runs in 5 1/3 innings.
