The Rays have designated Hideki Matsui for assignment so they can add newly acquired Ryan Roberts to their 40-man roster.
Matsui debuted with Tampa Bay on May 29 and had a .147 average in 34 games. He signed with the Rays on April 30 and hit .170 in 13 games with Triple-A Durham.
